Harry Dresden by thegryph Harry Dresden by thegryph
"The world is getting weirder. Darker every single day. Things are spinning around faster and faster, and threatening to go completely awry. Falcons and falconers. The center cannot hold.

But in my corner of the country, I'm trying to nail things down. ... I don't want to live in a world where the strong rule and the weak cower. I'd rather make a place where things are a little quieter. Where trolls stay the hell under their bridges, and where elves don't come swooping out to snatch children from their cradles. Where vampires respect the limits, and where the faeries mind their p's and q's.

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. When things get strange, when what goes bump in the night flicks on the lights, when no one else can help you, give me a call. I'm in the book."

- Jim Butcher

Edit: To answer the two most common questions I get about this - the dog was intended to be one of the hexenwulfen from Fool Moon, though if it makes you happy to make it Mouse in your heads, I'm cool with that. For all the endless commentary on his hat... seriously, guys, this piece is probably four years old at this point. Please take it as read that I have been reminded by many, many people that he doesn't wear one in canon, but I'm unlikely to change it this far down the road.

Ok, I'm not talking about the hat, but he looks a bit short. I mean, Dresden should look like a NBA player in trenchcoat. The wolf is obviously a werewolf, it could never be Mouse.
The technique is brilliant. Just brilliant.

Great story telling.  Nice palette.

Oh this looks so bad ass! I recently jut got into the series not too long ago and I'm really enjoying the stories mix of fantasy, crime drama, and humor. The colors, composition, and shading. Its all well done!

LOVE IT! My favorite wizard from my favorite series. I love how the author made it seem like he sometimes talks to the audience. I always find myself laughing out loud. :XD:

This really captures the feeling of the books.  I really love the Chicago skyline and the lighting.

This looks fantastic, and hey, he wears the hat in the cover art for the books, so even though it's not in the text it kind of works anyway. Personally, I love the whole piece!

Beautifully done.

He's in a hat in all the book covers, so much so that Butcher even jokes about it in one of the more recent books, after he dons his infamous black leather duster. So screw it, it's in keeping and it gives him that really gritty Dirty Harry detective feel that is so prominent in the books.

Personally I took one look at this and was like YEAAAAH FOOL MOON!!! I love it. This is a great piece.

First time I looked at this I thought it was official artwork. VERY nice work.

Quick note, the Hexanwulfen are humaniod. They are shown to use guns at one point too.

Five years later... this looks awesome to me. Hat included.

Another thing people seem to forget is that, despite Harry even say on a few occasdions that he doesn't "do" hats, he is still nevertheless depicted on every single blessed book cover wearing one. I'm thinking that it's some sort of running gag with Jim Butcher.

Nicely done! And hat, shmat! I like it - gives him "mystery" to have his face in shadow as he casts! :)

this is great. I love the way the city looks in the background, and I really like the gritty, supernatural feel to this. who cares about the hat? he's got a hat on in all the book covers!

a lovely and vivid piece of art about one of my favorite book characters. Awesome job mate ;)
Axegrinder96 Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2013
Very vivid I really like this piece. I agree with the other poster you should be doing covers. I remember how shocked I was with the Wheel of Time covers being so crappy. Great series(first 5 books anyway) but really crappy covers. But I digress.

I love the hat. I also like that his oft mentioned "duster" isn't taking over the entire portrait. Butcher really likes "duster" imagery and never fails to describe in detail flowing coattails. I blame too many comic books.

Is that Billy Borden in the back?

Very good picture
Eldardude1 Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2012
This is damned cool. Reminds me of his trip into undertown to see the winter lady in Summer Knight.

This looks good enough for you to be his cover artist. I'm very impressed with how little of Harry you can actually see, while at the same time his style and personality are quite evident. Great job.
Should I also talk about the hat? Nah
Keep up the excellent work.

The Dresden Files is on my 'must read now!' list. And this is...just gorgeous.
grasshopper1992 Featured By Owner Oct 11, 2012
I love this piece!! The Dresden Files are one of my favourite series and this captures Harry's essence so well. Is there any way to get it as a print?
bolasanibk Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2012
From what I read around on the net, the hat is a running gag between the cover artist and the author.
iCrypto Featured By Owner Aug 7, 2012  Student Traditional Artist
I never understood how they must put Harry in a hat in all the covers yet he has mentioned in the books themselves he doesn't like wearing hats. Arrgh!!
kwelipatton Featured By Owner Aug 2, 2012
Why the hat that kills me. In book 12 or 11 he says i hate hats. I love the art.
Leinster13 Featured By Owner Jul 25, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
This is good stuff right here. I don't know why people get so hung up,on the hat. I know it never mentions him wearing one but it definitely fits his character and each cover that shows him features a hat. Even before I saw those though, I always pictured him with one. Keep up the good work.

Wow, this is a great representation of Dresen and the Dresden Files. Also, I think the snippet in the description goes with this well. :)
Caraval Featured By Owner Apr 20, 2012
I think this is an excellent representation of Dresden and the tone of the novels. Of course Chicago isn't always dark, stormy, and trashed where Dresden is working, but the stories always become dark and complicated; it often seems as if Dresden is surrounded by a dark cloud. Wonderful job.
bigbubba23 Featured By Owner Apr 16, 2012
First off, if you drew this, i'm impressed... but why give him a hat? he HATES wearing hats. he's made his opinion on his wardrobe pretty clear XD

Dresden is my favorite Fantasy Character, Butcher is my Favorite author and this is a beautiful illustration. Good work.

He has a Fedora, but he had to put in the shop for a busted transmission

Great work on this. Detail's amazing :D

My only question (It's been so long since I've read the series), is that Billy in the background or Mouse?

Oh ho ho ho, this is awesome. The books are so much better than the DVDs, and this is exactly how I imagined him from the books :D
KarrinBlue Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2012
Awesome. Is that big black dog supposed to be Mouse?

Also, Harry has no hat. He thinks they are silly (Changes.)

Amazing work! The textures of different materials come through clearly, regardless of what each one is.
I also have to wonder where you found an appropriately-furred and incredibly patient dog-model, and how you managed to get the poor thing to stand still under a bluish light until you got the shading right...
Thank you for sharing this!
iamnuff Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2011
yeah, as the books go on he starts to hate all headware, and the hats on the cover get bigger and cooler.

but yeah, he looks so much better with a hat
ZachLorenc Featured By Owner Aug 25, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Why is he wearing a hat though? He never wore a hat.
